Fuji Rock 2004

Múm (ISR)
Interesting, trancy tracks that were largely instrumental, a few vocal elements but seemed more part of the overall sound, rather than distinct components. Pretty much all the brain-drive space allocated to this set was wiped however beeeeeeeeeeeecause…I ran into Stuart (dreamy!) from Belle & Sebastian! omgomgomg! :BOUNCE:…okay, I’m settled.

“Can I trouble you for a picture”
“I’m sorry.”
“Thanks so much for coming to Japan, it’s so great that you guys could come all the way out here…thanks so much…blah blah blah GUSH blah…I hope you guys are enjoying it over here.”
“Oh yeah sure. Have you been here for long?”
“No I just moved over recently, I caught you guys in uh, May at the Coachella festival in california?”
“Oh, right. That was fun.”
“Yeah it was a great time, ah man it’s going to be so great to see your show tonight.”
“Oh are you coming to the show?”
“Oh yeah you bet.”
“Well do you have any requests? I’m trying to put the setlist together for tonight.”
“Ah! Oh man I don’t know! Wow! continued exclamations and fanboy idiot noises for another fifteen secs. or so So, yeah! ummm…mind is blank on all song titles…this is day three, gimme a break fer chrissakes…yeah it’d be great if you could play…well, Sinister is my favorite album so anything from that would be fantastic…maybe, Fox In The Snow…only song title I can remember…but whatever I’m sure you’ve played those songs like, a Billion times and all that, so y’know whatever you think’s best well DUH moron.”
“Hmm. Yeah, well that’s a bit strange being that it’s the middle of summer and all…outdoor show.”
idiot! Oh, right…want to have some sort of relevance type thing going on yeah, that’s cool that’s cool……uh, well, it is a ski resort!”
“Yeah, heh. I guess so.”
“But you know, whatever works out I’m just so glad you guys could be here I have now told him this for approx. the eightieth time in under five minutes.”
30 seconds of silence – desperately trying to think of something interesting to say to keep him interested, must…keep…talking
“Oh, I’ve just seen the other folks in the band, so I think I’m going to head up and hang out with them for a bit.”
“Hey yeah of course! Great to meet you man! Take it easy!” sob.

I wish I had told him that the first time I heard their album ‘Sinister’, I was sick and heartsick and just downright miserable, and I played it back-to-back three times…which I’m not sure I’ve ever done before or since with any other album, certainly not on a first listen. I wish I had told him how that album grabbed me right at that moment and didn’t let go…that would have been about a 1000X cooler than what actually happened…sigh.

  1. yay! Wicked good wrap-up. Glad to hear you had such a fun time. And SO JEALOUS that you met Stuart from B&S. I would have scream-asked him to sing “A Summer Wasting” or “Electronic Renassiance” but hey, at least you remember ONE of their tracks. ;o) Boston B&S fans are the best uber-dorks on the planet…especially since NONE of them would stand up during the concert. God forbid you startle the band by having a good time.

I’m happy you had fun poopeye!!!!

  2. Dude! Awesome!!!!!! Some of that stuff sounded like it was worth all the rest of it. I don’t know how you keep the energy level up at stuff like that. It must be something you eat. But that sounds awesome! I just want to say that Ball & Biscuit and The Big Three Killed My Baby are my favorite White Stripes songs, so I’m glad they kicked at the show. I also want to tell you I know what you mean about playing an album three times in a row after buying it, I did that with Neutral Milk Hotel’s Aeroplane Over the Sea, except it was more like five times in a row (and I think I did that with Modest Mouse’s most recent one, Good News for People Who Like Bad News).
